Jon McCard Professor Andy May 1, 2007 Research Paper Suicide, Depression and Stress in a College Campus One of the biggest death rates in this country is by suicide . It is the twelfth leading killer . Suicide causes 25,000 deaths per year in the United States . There are two different forms of suicide; there is intentional and subintentional . Intentional suicide did all in his power to complete the act . The subintentional suicide had hoped a rescuer would intervene and hear his or her “cry for help .” Frustrated attempts at suicide are usually subintentional . Eighty percent of all suicides have previously recorded attempts . Too often those who might have helped following such an attempt preferred to believe the danger was past and to remain secretive about it . I believe that there are many different alternatives rather than suicide that students should be taking . This is a topic that should be talked about more often because 1/3 of college student’s deaths occur by suicide . There are many warning signs out there for people to tell if a person is suicidal . Sometimes, a person will make actions resembling suicide attempts while not being fully committed, or in a deliberate attempt to have others notice . 1

Jon McCard Professor Andy May 1, 2007 Research Paper This is called a suicidal gesture which is also known as a cry for help in most cases . Prototypical methods might be a non lethal method of self harm that leaves obvious signs of the attempt, or simply a lethal action at a time when the person considers it likely that he/she will be rescued or prevented from fully carrying it out . On the other hand, a person who genuinely wishes to die may fail, due to lack of knowledge about what they are doing, unwillingness to try methods that may end in permanent damage if he fails or harms others, or an unanticipated rescue, among other reasons . This is referred to as a suicide attempt . Many of the people that try an attempt at suicide and fail often have serious injuries which are often permanent . Some people who just want to do a suicidal gesture actually end up killing themselves, probably by underestimating a medication or lethality of the method used . There are many different reasons why college students might want to try killing themselves . Another reason is college students have a great deal of stress to maintain good grades throughout their schooling . They get a great deal of pressure from their parents and relatives to do well in school and that’s hard to deal with as a college student . There is also a lot of pressure to keep of with friends with good grades . Sometimes it is hard to see a friend get a higher grade than you, which can create a lot of stress on a person . Students can fall into a 2
