R. Madison Haynie English 102 Annotated Bibliography Sprawling Can Hurt Andres Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Jeff Speck. Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream . New York: North Point Press, 2001 The authors of this book, who lead a firm that has designed more then two hundred new neighborhoods and community plans, challenge widely accepted planning and building practices that have produced sprawling subdivisions, shopping centers and office parks connected by highways. According to the book, most of the failure of the modern suburb is due to the automobile. It also makes the claim that people want to live in the suburbs for a smaller community, but the way they are built frustrates any chance of finding it. I found this book intriguing, because the authors understand why I like my neighborhood. Even better, they understand why I hate so many new housing projects. Bruegmann, Robert. Sprawl: A Compact History . Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2006 In this book Robert Bruegmann calls sprawl a logical consequence of economic growth and the democratization of society, with benefits that urban planners have failed to recognize. Taking a long view of urban development, he demonstrates that sprawl is not recent or exclusively American, but as old as cities themselves, just as characteristic of ancient Rome and eighteenth-century Paris as it is of Atlanta or Los Angeles. Sprawl, like any settlement pattern, has undoubtedly produced problems that must be addressed, but his book also notes that it has provided millions of people with the kinds of mobility, privacy, and choice that once only belonged to the rich and powerful.
