1. What are the heinous crimes committed by Kurtz and the ivory trade in general in the Heart of Darkness? Severing of limbs, burdening the natives with carrying heavy loads over great distances, and slaughtering both humans and animals for the sake of ivory are the crimes commited by Kurtz and the ivory trade but perhaps the most odious of all crimes is the dehumanization of the African people. Most people simply see the surface of the crimes committed during the African Holocaust but if you delve just an inch more into the heart of darkness, the irony of it all will 1. What are the heinous crimes committed by Kurtz and the ivory trade in general in the Heart of Darkness? Severing of limbs, burdening the natives with carrying heavy loads over great distances, and slaughtering both humans and animals for the sake of ivory are the crimes commited by Kurtz and the ivory trade but perhaps the most odious of all crimes is the dehumanization of the African people. Most people simply see the surface of the crimes committed during the African Holocaust but if you delve just an inch more into the heart of darkness, the irony of it all will become apparent. Aren't all of the physical atrocities committed against the Africans enough evidence of the damage done to that race? Do we truly need to dig deeper to find evidence? The answer is yes and it lies in the irony of the Europeans' behavior. They sought to civilize this wild and savage race yet they did the exact opposite. They undid eons of work that went into "civilizing" their own society and while trying to civilize the savages they degraded their humanity. 2. Can "civilized" man effectively help those whom he considers "uncivilize" or dies he do more harm than good?
