Madison Haynie ARS 102 Dr. Lindsey Pedersen 11/11/06 Part 2: Critical Analysis Manet’s Bar at the Folies-Bergere This analysis is of two articles will be used to discuss the social changes and trends in France during the 19 th century in relations to Manet’s Bar at the Folies-Bergere . The articles that address these issues and will be used are Glueck’s “Art and the Oldest Profession” a review of PAINTED LOVE Prostitution in French Art of the Impressionist Era by Hollis Clayson, and Isken’s “Selling, Seduction, and Soliciting the Eye: Manet's Bar at the Folies-Bergere .” Both Glueck and Isken interpret Manet’s Bar at the Folies- Bergere as a statement of 19 th century social context in France; however, Glueck narrow mindedly focuses on the roles of women as prostitutes in France, while Isken convincingly relates mass consumption, the changing roles of women, and the development of the modern crowd with the budding new social changes. Glueck’s article aims at the view of women in 19 th century France and their roles as prostitutes, and how she believes this was a popular subject for other male writers and artists. She analyses the piece using another article by Hollis Clayson, an art historian at
