Psych Notes: 4/17/08 Work and Well-Being Work is an important part of Life Work- Career, Job, Education All defined to some degree apart from “social” or “personal” life May be for money, but getting your degree, or volunteering when retired are also part of this domain How do we define work? Job- focus on minimizing one’s hassle, and maximizing pay Career- focus on advancement, status, place in one’s profession Calling- focus on how work meets one’s values, work as a mission, merging of work and personal life Each way of Approaching work has Advantages and Disadvantages Work as “job” Good for maintaining work-life balance, short-term perspective, work as “fun” In the long run, low fulfillment Work as “career” Consistent with a life plan, monetary success If career becomes focused on money, other aspects of life may suffer. “What am I doing this for” phenomenon
