"PE Do People Take More Risks When Safety Nets Exist? : NPR
turn again to an episode of NPR'S Hidden brain with Shankar vedantain as frost. This is a very sad and honest portrayal of the anguish
opioid addiction. Please don't play this in front of small children or anyone else who would be unduly upset. If you yourself cannot listen to
is, please contact the teacher for an alternate assignment.
Upload Assignment: Assignment 7: Life, Death and the Lazarus Drug - Confronting America's Opioid Epidemic
1. This podcast opens up by defining a term called "moral hazard" and giving a few everyday examples. Please explain what a "moral
hazard" is in your own words and give two of the examples.
2. The host then notes that the "CDC" reported a certain number of deaths from opioid overdose in 2017. What does the "CDC" stand
for? How many deaths were there? How many people die of tobacco per year? (The opioid epidemic is horrible; but please don't
forget about the tobacco companies crimes as you review this issue).
3. We then follow the tragic story of a young woman through an interview with her parents. How did Alicia first get introduced to an
opioid? Which one was it? What did she switch to? Why did she switch?
4. What drug is currently being used to save thousands of people from overdosing across the country? How is it typically administered
now? Why do the authors use the term "Lazarus"? (They explain in the podcast).
5. The producers of the show end up interviewing one set of researchers who have raised concerns about the use of Narcon, related to
the term "moral hazard". What is their concern and what evidence do they cite to justify their argument?
6. Other scientists feel that due to certain methodological flaws, this negative interpretation is probably not really correct. What is their
reasoning?
7. Toward the end of the podcast, host Shankar Vedantam interviews two clients who are receiving methadone from a clinic. The
younger client, a woman named Tiffany, acknowledges the pros and cons of Narcan. Why does she think it should still be available?
8. Please end this very important assignment by sharing with me what struck you the most about this story? What did you learn new?
Does this relate to anything that you, your family or friends have experienced?
