Metamorphic Rocks HCLAVEY Materials: Metamorphic rock samples: slate, schist, gneiss, marble, quartzite, anthracite coal, phyllite and hornfels Magnifying Glass Tray Earth Science Reference Table Procedure : 1. Collect one (1) sample of each of the metamorphic rocks and place them on a tray. 2. At your lab work station, examine each sample for similar characteristics. Decide which samples show foliation (layering or banding) and which show non-foliation (massive). Separate the samples into 2 piles, foliated and non-foliated. 3. Using your Earth Science Reference Tables and Chart 1 on page 4 of this lab, match the metamorphic rock samples with their names and complete their characteristics. 4. When you think you have them matched correctly, raise your hand so your teacher can check for corrections. 5. Answer the observations and conclusions questions. Observations and Conclusions – answer the following on a Google Doc and include a picture of your rocks and classification chart.
