Joseon Dynasty: Hermit Kingdom (1 of 3 kingdoms of ancient korea) unified and stable and isolated for over 500 years korean culture developed in powerful and vivid form by middle ages - korean art forms are almost fully formed and unique except for its relation to Chinese culture homogenous national culture late 19th century: collapse - chihwaseon set in this period cultural collapse as well internal strength falls as British colonizers enter 1920 annexed to Japan: vicious colonial occupation brutal repression of independence or resistance imprisonment language is repressed (forced to speak Japanese) women forced to become prostitutes for army brothels 1945. expulsion of Japanese - but division between USA and USSR at 38 parallel. supposed to be elections but USSR refused and country was split communist party rules N. - now Kim Jong Il - Juch’e (self-reliance) is driving
