Among the various ways a small business owner must communicate in order to run a successful venture, customer service stands out as one of the most important. Customer service can carry a broad range of meanings, but most understand it to be the communication and interaction between a business and a client or customer before, during, and after a transaction. Though the importance of customer service may vary with each individual interaction, a customer’s impression of a business is often as important as the product or service the business provides. As Janet Wagner, a professor of marketing at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland said, “Small businesses are especially dependent on personal relationships… The willingness [of a customer] to refer a business is a measure of customer loyalty plus you save money on advertising” (Stewart).
