Alan VanToai 108877115 CPSP118R November 5, 2006 Heather Raffo’s 9 Parts of Desire The American Cultures field trip to the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. last Thursday brought us to the very emotionally driven play “9 Parts of Desire,” as written and performed by the exceptionally creative and talented Heather Raffo. Throughout the play, Raffo single-handedly acted out the lives of different women who were all in some way affected by the conflicts in Iraq. Although not all of the characters were Iraqi women directly affected by the turmoil, all of them shared the common trait of viewing the world from the perspective of a woman. For many Americans, and people around the globe in general, the media controls what is seen and heard from many parts of the world. This is true for the conflicts in Iraq, as many Americans are so far detached from the country and its troubles that they have distorted or indifferent perspectives and opinions on the issues of Iraq. For many, Iraq is just another desolate, terror laden country that is a far cry from the luxuries and comforts
