Alan VanToai September 20, 2006 Musc205 (204) Paper Assignment #2: Music Industry The two required readings on the music industry, while both accurate, highlighted different aspects of the music industry. Each author also presented their views in very different styles. The first article, “Introduction” by Simon Frith, was a presentation of his justification for studying Rock music as a legitimate topic from a sociologist’s perspective. His article highlights many important concepts of rock including its undeniable social importance, many statistics relating to CD and other music related products, and important distinctions between rock and other genres such as easy listening and pop. His delivery was very professional, formal, and impartial, which is to be expected from an Oxford Journalism graduate. In contrast, Courtney Love’s article on the evils of the recording companies from an artist’s perspective was delivered in a very informal, straight-to the point, and angry style.
