The take away… Early 1900s the moving picture introduced the kiss. Later on the automobile would provide a ‘place for sex.’ Anthony Comstock – introduced the Comstock Act 1870s – illegal to send any obscene materials through the mail. Margaret Sanger a nurse in New York City was an advocate for women’s reproductive rights and became an activist for contraceptives; she was arrested in 1914 and fled to Europe – returned to the U.S. in 1916 and continued her work.
Continued 1917 WWI – instituted the first national sex education campaign which focused on abstinence. During WWI 7 million man hours were lost due to VD – social diseases. The war ended in 1919 and ushered in what became known as the roaring ‘20s’ a sexually liberating era.
