Are we having sex or what? By: Greta Christina
Are We Having Sex Now or What? Greta Christina Christina deconstructs conventional notions of what it means to be ‘having sex’ by exploring her personal experiences with intimate partners and her exploration of sexual pleasure through self-stimulation. Christina believes this is an important question because: “You have to know what qualifies as sex because when you have sex with someone your relationship changes. Right?” (5) Christina distinguishes between ‘feeling sexual’ and ‘being sexual’ and asserts it is not the same as ‘having sex’ (6) One possible definition she offers is : “Perhaps having sex with someone is the conscious, consenting, mutually acknowledged pursuit of shared sexual pleasure.” ( 6)
Continued Christina revises her definition to: “…the conscious, consenting, mutually acknowledged pursuit of sexual pleasure of at least one of the people involved.” (6) Christina asserts: “…sex equals intercourse – has a serious flaw: it includes rape, which is something I emphatically refuse to accept.” (6) Christina concludes her discussion by saying: “I still don’t have an answer.” (7)
Alfred Kinsey 1894 - 1956
Alfred Kinsey & The Kinsey Report Vera L. Bullough In America and much of the world, his work was a decisive factor in changing attitudes toward sex.” Within the field of sexuality, he reoriented the field, moving it away from the medical model and medical dominance to one encompassing a variety of disciplines and approaches.” (50)
Kinsey Cont’d Prior to Kinsey: Sex Research 1890 – 1940 In the 19 th Century the field was dominated by physicians – thought to be the experts on body functions. (50) Previously, the field of study had been viewed as moral issue. (50) Early 20 th Century sex researchers were: Havelock Elli and Magnus Hirschfield both physicians who compiled sexual histories prior to Kinsey’s research (50) Physicians of the time approached the subject as zeitgeist “the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era” rather than “any specialized base of knowledge” (50)
