Scott R. Smith ENEE473 Lab 1: AC Circuits and Power Factor February 16, 2007 Purpose: This lab introduces power factor and the correction of power factor. Simple analog devices are used to complete this task. Devices and Instrumentation: Resistor Banks – Each bank of resistors is made up of ten individual resistors that can be connected together using single pole double throw switches. By systematically setting the switches it is possible to create many resistance values by combining series and parallel branches in one bank. Each resistor has a power dissipation rating of 100 W . The power dissipation capacity can be increased by using parallel branches of resistors to achieve the same value as a series connection would. Capacitor Bank – The bank of capacitors is made up of three capacitors. Bannana plug jumper wires are used to connect the capacitors in series, parallel, or a combination to achieve many values of capacitance. Inductor Bank – The bank of inductors is made up of three inductors. Bannana plug jumper wires are used to connect the capacitors in series, parallel, or a combination to achieve many values of inductance. Oscilloscope – The scope is used to view phase differences between signals. Experimental Procedure: I. RC Circuit 1. Connect a 250 resistance and a 15.4 μ F capacitor in series, supplied by one phase of the variac, with meters set up to measure the voltage across each element, current through the appropriate nodes such that the wave forms for the resistor and capacitor voltages can be seen on the scope. 2. Increase the supply voltage to near 120 V , recording the exact value. 3. Measure the resistor and capacitor voltages, current and power supplied by the source. 4.
