SomethingBasic Summary For Application Letter TestMaterials: Chapter 13 – 5 BCOM Book, PowerPoint 2 & 3, and Dos and Don’ts.Chapter 13 – 5:Application message or the application letter (also known as a cover message) can take the formof an email message. Due to the fact that it’s suppose to create interest and points outemployer benefits, the application message is persuasive and thus written inductively.Application messages can be either solicited or unsolicited. Job advertisements solicitapplications. Unsolicited application messages have greater need for attention-getters.Disadvantages in unsolicited messages: employer’s needs are not known and the openingparagraph will likely be more general.-Organize of Application Message:Gets Attention, Introduces qualifications, presents evidence, and encourages action = results inan interview.Two to four paragraphs are normally sufficient for supporting evidence.-Gain the Receiver’s Attention:Begin the message by identifying the job sought and describing how your qualifications fit thejob requirements. For an announced job, you should indicate in the first paragraph how youlearned of the position – for example, employee referral;, newspaper advertising, or job fair.An opening for an unsolicited message must be more persuasive: you must convince theinterviewer to continue to read your qualifications even though a job might not exist.Example:

Something-Provide Evidence of Qualifications:For graduates entering the world of full-time work for the first time, educational backgroundsare usually more impressive than work histories. Do not just say that an educational or workexperience was beneficial; say what made it so.Example:If you’ve formally worked before: Include interpretation of experiences on the present orprevious job to show employer that you are well prepared for your next job. Added details andinterpretation could make the value of the work experience more convincing.Example:The applicant has called attention to qualities that managers like to see in employees.

SomethingOr discuss qualifications you have developed by participating in student organizations studentgovernment etc. You can also use your involvement as a channel for discussing importantpersonal traits vital to the success of a business, such as interpersonal skills, motivation etc.Example:Avoid the obvious statement “Enclosed please find my resume” or “A resume is enclosed.”Instead, refer indirectly to the resume while restating your qualifications:Example:References listed on the enclosed resume would be glad to comment on my marketingeducation and experience. (Example from BCOM Book)-Encourage Action:Encourage the receiver to extend an invitation for an interview. Avoid these frequently madeerrors:1.Setting a date. “May I have an appointment with you on January 15?”2.
