Folker1 Levi Folker Mrs. Erickson AP Literature and Comp. Symbols of Christianity in Bram Stoker’sDracula In Bram Stoker’s, Dracula, he writes a story that exemplifies the impact of an immortal man. In his work, Stoker uses many symbols to Christianity in Dracula’s weaknesses, abilities, and devouring of souls. Each part of Dracula’s essence is closely related to a part or symbol in Christianity making Dracula be an equal symbol for sin. Dracula is a symbol of sin. Sin is an evil that one cannot tell if one has fallen prey to it until it is too late. With a variety of powers that aid in him, such as hypnotism, invulnerability, invisibility in mirrors and shapeshifting, it is easy for unsuspecting victims to fall prey to Dracula or sin. With the ability to hypnotize people, Dracula is able to cause victims to not realize they are in a bad situation until it is much too late. He subdues his victims into a trance where they don’t know what is happening to them. Sin can have the same affect in that one is so entranced in whatever they are currently doing that they don’t realize the over consequences of their actions. Dracula isn’t vulnerable to much, in fact there are few things that weaken him and even fewer that kill him. This is much similar to how sin is. The world is easily overcome by sin and there isn’t much that can subdue sin in the world. In fact nothing has been able to rid the world of sin, only a group of people who try their best to not sin. Dracula’s ability to not be seen in mirrors highlights this aspect of sin. Sin in the world is difficult to tell when one has been overcome by it and when it is creeping into one’s life.
