Introduction Health information technology has seen a resurgence throughout the healthcare industry. The healthcare information technology industry has seen an increase in the membership to many informatics healthcare organizations. Throughout this paper I will explore the health informatics organizations such as the American Medical Informatics Association, The American Nursing Informatics Association, The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, The Association for Veterinary Informatics, and The American National Standards Institute. I will also discuss which professional organization would could be the most useful to my professional development. Health information systems are a requirement for healthcare organizations to remain competitive in the healthcare industry and these professional organizations provide guidance and standards to a growing informatics industry. American Medical Informatics Association The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is an informatics professional association that looks to deepen the role of informatics in the healthcare industry. AMIA’s core purpose is centered on the advancement of science of informatics, promote the education of informatics, assure that health information technology is used most effectively to promote health and health care, advance the profession of informatics, and provide services for our members such as networking and opportunities for professional development. The AMIA connects professionals, students interested in informatics, along with consumers on how informatics can improve the healthcare industry and is need for the current and future development of the healthcare industry.

American Nursing Informatics Association The American Nursing Informatics Association is an organization of professional nurses and associates that utilize informatics to improve the health of populations, communities, families and individuals by optimizing information management and communication. This organization integrates nursing science with computer and information sciences to the delivery of healthcare services in the most cost effective manner. They are also engaged in the development of professional nurses and associates looking to get into the informatics community.
