Toolbox Characters: Henry Foster Lenina Mustapha Mond Bernard Helmholtz John Linda Themes: Good of the individual vs. Good of the whole Social Taboos Excessive happiness Allusion and origin: The “savages” are actually native Americans. Lots of biblical allusions Symbols: “Predestination” is fate Soma is an easy way out and instant gratification Diction: A lot of words were given negative and positive connotations which they do not have in our current time. For instance, “mother” was not a good word that brings to mind good memories but rather “savage” and “uncivilized” life. Imagery: The brave new world seemed to be sterile in many senses and beauty in art did not exist. Everything was superficial. Details: The savage ended up killing himself at the end of the book. The directions that were stated were the way his feet were moving from where he was hanging. Language: A lot of the language felt like it was retro-futuristic; as in the book seemed to have language that seemed futuristic to people from the time it was written. The future in the book is
