GEOS 218: Geological Disasters and Society April 2008 Homework 5 Assigned: April 17, 2008 Due: April. 24, 2008 NAME Chad M. Jawors 1. (5 pts) Describe two reasons why melting of the Greenland Ice sheet could be worrisome to society. There will be a dramatic increase in the world's sea level, reducing shore lines world wide. The rapid decrease in ice will have an effect on the large population of wildlife that lives on the ice. 2. (5 pts) In your own words, describe the differences between single-cell and supercell thunderstorms. Use a sketch of each as well as words to describe the differences. Supercell thunderstroms are the most severe thunderstorms that can occur any place on earth with the right climate conditions. They are one of the only few clouds that can produce tornados and are associated with mid-latitude cold fronts. Single-cell storms are associated with mid-latitudes during the summer and at the equator all year long. 3. (5 pts) What are 3 conditions necessary for a hurricane to form?
