FORUM DESCRIPTION 1. One of the most contentious debates among scholars of early American history focuses on the decline of the Native-American population of North America. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Native-American population of the present territory of the United States and Canada numbered between 2.1 and 18 million people (estimates clearly range widely among scholars, but over the past few decades many historians have started arguing in favor of the higher population estimate).
