2016-11-14 Half Life The elements undergoing transmutations proceed at a rate relative to the amount of the element present in the sample The rate of transmutation slows as the amount of material decreases. If it takes 15 years for a 20g sample to drop to 10g, it will take another 15 years for the next 5g transmute. In that example half of the original substance, transmutes into something new in 15 years. The time it takes for half of the sample to break down is called the half-life . T 1 2 = 15 years The half life is different for each radioisotope Carbon-14 5730 years Uranium-238 4.45 X 10 9 years Cobalt-60 5.3 years Beryllium-8 2 X 10 -16 years Mathematically you can determine the amount left by multiplying by ½ every half-life that passes by. Example The half-life of a Cobalt-60 is 5.3 years. A medical scanning device is initially charged with a 10g sample. How much of the Cobalt-60 will be left after 15.9 years? 3 half-lives have passed by, (3X5.3=15.9)
