Ch 10 372-406 Democracy in America, 1815-1840 Jackson=self made man=spread of democracy THE TRIUMPH OF DEMOCRACY Property and Democracy Market revolution and territorial expansion were intimately connect with a third element of AM freedom: political Democracy Everyone insisted that they had the right to vote Property requirements for voting slowly went away; the personal independence necessary in the citizen now rested not on ownership of property, but on ownership of one’s self The Dorr War Exception to trend towards democratization = Rhode Island It was a center of factory production with property-less wage earners Ratifiers of constitution formed a People’s Convention, drafted a new const, enfranchised all adult white men (and eliminated black voting rights), but President John Tyler sent troops to take out Thomas Dorr (elected governor) Tocqueville on Democracy by 1840 more than 90% of adult white men could vote Alexis Tocqueville (French): wrote an account of AM society amidst a political transformation noted that Democracy was crucial to American freedom and is unique Democracy reinforced a sense of equality among those who belonged to the political nation The Information Revolution info rev = explosion in printing and large expansion of public sphere produced by market rev and democracy application of steam power added to increased output in newspaper production Low postal rates = easier transfer of information Each party need their views published → newspapers ftw low cost of printing = appearance of “alternative” newspapers (ex: news for blacks, abolitionists, etc) more women writers The Limits of Democracy The axiom that “the people ruled had become a universally accepted part of AM politics democracy limited to white males of age women basically had no rights A Racial Democracy Blacks are seen as a separate group in society in the early 19th century. Minstrel shows were a type of racist imagery to satirize the African American stereotypes After the revolutionary era, the states started to use race as a barrier for the right of suffrage for blacks. After the year 1800, every state limited the the right to vote to only white males except for Maine. Race and Class 1821, same NY convention that removed property qualifications for whites raised it for the blacks. I'm getting real tired of this anti-Nigga shit. Even Philadelphia, a haven for educated blacks, also did it. Only one guy refused from Pennsylvania bc he made excuse that it was limiting suffrage to whites: Maboi thaddeus Stevens, the og baller in the civil war later on. Pretty much everyone else tho are evil fuqbois. NATIONALISM AND ITS DISCONTENTS The American War War of 1812 made Americans really happy because they felt that had managed to bring a major power to a stalemate.
