29 Polyatomic Ions A polyatomic ion is a charged group of covalently bonded atoms. NH 4 + CO 3 2 ClO 4 CN OH NO 3 PO 4 3 SO 4 2 “Thio-” A sulfur atom replacing an oxygen atom. 30 •- ite and - ate are commonly found as suffixes in oxygen-containing polyatomic ions (oxoanions). hypo -and per - are sometimes seen as prefixes in oxygen-containing polyatomic ions - ite has one fewer oxygen atom and the same charge as – ate . SO 3 2- sulfite ion SO 4 2- sulfate ion Hypo - represents one fewer oxygen than the – ite anion. Per - represents one more oxygen than the – ate anion.
