47 Industry applications 1. Oxygen is a common oxidizing agent used in steel making. 2. Oxygen is used to oxidize hydrogen and acetylene in torches for welding and cutting. 3. Chlorine gas and its compounds are used as oxidizing agents in water treatment plants for killing microorganisms, and in paper and textile industries for bleaching. 4. Industrial reducing agents: carbon and hydrogen. Used in manufacturing iron from ore. Applications of Oxidation and Reduction 48 Everyday Life 1. Oxygen serves to oxidize fuel, and corrode metals. 2. Hydrogen peroxide is used as antiseptics to treat minor cuts. 2H 2 O 2 (aq) 2 H 2 O(l) + O 2 (g) +1 –1 +1 –2 0 H 2 O 2 is both an oxidizing and a reducing agent. Called disproportionation reaction .
