In the first half of the 19 th century, the steamboat, canal, railroad and telegraph were introduced. This made transportation a lot cheaper and faster for companies. It also linked farmers to national markets. The railroad provided jobs for so many Americans, even though many were immigrants. Telegraphs made it possible to communicate cross country, at least faster than mail would. 2. How did state and local governments promote the national economy in this period? The Market Revolution was a major change in the manual labor system. People operated machinery to do their jobs faster, example the cotton gin. More produce/products in a short amount of time means that America can make more money. 3. How did the market economy and westward expansion entrench the institution of slavery?
