1 Aaron Bourey 05/08/08 SOC 101 1:15 Sociological Analysis of Unplanned Pregnancy Unplanned pregnancy is a very serious issue among teenagers and young adults that is discussed in health classes all throughout junior highschool through to college these days. Contraception and ways to protect against unplanned pregnancy are out there and readily available, however, it still seems to be a problem today. Why? Well a functionalist would maintain that unplanned pregnancy exists and persists because as a society we haven’t found a way to educate and provide contraceptive efforts to those at risk of unplanned pregnancies. Functionalism interprets each part of society, in this case unplanned pregnancy, to the stability of the whole. In other words, how unplanned pregnancy contributes to the status quo. The manifest function is the stated and unintended goals of social behavior. If I were a functionalist, the manifest function of unplanned pregnancy would be to have an educated awareness of risks of unplanned pregnancies of women between ages 18-44 and lower the unplanned pregnancy rate. The latent consequences are the unintended consequences of behavior
