April Stamm 25-Feb-08 Journal Entry Maimonides most values the ability to logically decipher the existence of God. He wrote of four levels of virtue, the first being material, the second being physical, the third being what I would have believed to be the common idea of virtue, and the fourth being simply the understanding (in your own right) of the existence of a God. If you were to ask me what my idea of the highest virtue was, I would tell you that it meant the attainment of ethics and morals. I would never have connected the highest form of virtue with the understanding of God’s existence, because I feel (quite contrary to the view of Maimonides) that you must first have faith in God’s existence before you are able to achieve morality, at least the spiritual sort that I believe is the topic here. I feel like Maimonides underestimates the ability of humans to decipher the existence of the metaphysical. He seems to believe that this is an idea that cannot be taught or passed down, rather one that must be discovered and reasoned through on ones’ own terms. He begins by
