Luis Sanchez AP English Block 3 3-17-16 1984 Book Response Section 1 1.“WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” Pg. 4. In the beginning of the novel, we see this quote when Winston has his flashback while writing in his diary. While writing in the diary, Winston writes about the war movies he saw, and that they were bombing refugees and shooting innocent people. The people of the Party applauded and the audience shouted with laughter, which suggests that this quote is a way of controlling people with war so that they unite together to create peace. 2.“Thoughtcrime does not entail death; thoughtcrime IS death.” Pg. 28. In this quote, Winston is writing in diary that he was already dead, and it started when he was able to formulate his thoughts and by doing this, he recognized that he had to stay alive as long as possible. He acknowledges that thinking about committing crimes will not only give him a chance to die, but a chance to die certainly without a doubt.
