Extra Credit Paper (Tariq Ali) Skylar Hochberg 10/27/06 Tariq Ali’s lecture on the “Clash of Fundamentalism” centered on many pressing issues facing the world today including the war in Iraq, the crisis in the Middle East, the Bush administration, and a misinformed public. Ali related the causes of these issues to the conflicting fundamentalisms of the Americans, Imperial Fundamentalism, and the religious fundamentalisms of the Muslims in the Middle East, and also gave insight into how to put an end to these fundamentalisms Ali pitted Imperialist Fundamentalism vs. Religious Fundamentalism. He described the United States as an imperialist fundamentalist nation that justifies its actions simply by believing that its way of life is better than other ways of life, and by claiming that since it is a world power it has the right to exert its will over other nations. Ali explains that this imperialist fundamentalist policy was the indirect cause of 9/11. He explained that 9/11 was a religious fundamentalist “blowback” to U.S. foreign policy in
