According to McCoy (2017), in November 2013, Target, a major retail and supermarket
franchise, was affected by a credit card data breach. During initial analysis, investigators
determined that the breach was conducted by cyber attackers who gained access to the
department stores' computer gateway from credentials fraudulently obtained by a third party.
With that data, these hackers were able to utilize the information to take advantage of the
weaknesses in Target's infrastructure. Consequently, the hackers were able to gain access to
a customer service database where they set up malware in the system and obtained sensitive
information such as credit card numbers, phone numbers, full names and addresses, and other
confidential data.
