Bohrer 1 Abbey Bohrer Mr. Bretz AP Literature and Composition 3 November 2016 One Art Poem Précis In the poem “One Art", Elizabeth Bishop illuminates that nothing in this life is eternal, and oftentimes, when human beings lose things that are important to them, they pretend to be strong and shake it off; however, this is inevitably futile, as the reality of the pain and loss will eventually come crashing in. She reveals this common truth first through the title “One Art”. This title causes the reader to imagine that the poem will be about a work of art; something aesthetically pleasing through word connotation. However, this is quickly addressed in the first sentence, “The art of losing isn’t hard to master” (line 1). This surprise to the reader causes them to reflect and think about whether there is perhaps something beautiful or pleasing about loss and hooks them with curiosity. Her message is furthered by the use of repetition. After each stanza,
