Final Sociology Paper Amahnte Knight 12/13/16 Society may show a blind eye or show ignorance to certain aspects of society like how race, structural conditions and social background affect socioeconomic inequality. Being unable to see facts that prove that American’s socioeconomic status is not based on meritocracy, but instead rely on a variety of things such as inequality. These inequalities create difficulties for people like African Americans and low-wage or poor people that have more discriminations and lack privileges. But there are strategies that people use to cope with low wages and economic strain. Are society may have parts in it that only help to extend these problems, but there may also be solutions too. For instance, in order to live somewhere for an affordable price, sacrificing conveniences like having a home near the job, a television, air conditioning, and etc. may be necessary. Instead of living in comfortable, large homes or apartments, people may have to live in cheaper establishments like in trailer homes, motels, flophouses, or even their cars. Just like the some of the staff at the Hearthside diner, like with Gail, “…she spent several months living in her truck, peeing in a plastic pee bottle and reading by candlelight at night, but you can’t live in a truck in the summer, since you need to have the window down, which means anything can get in, from mosquitoes on up” (Ehrenreich 1999 p. 333) But another way to live somewhere is to have a roommate or live with family, to help cut the price of living somewhere. For example, “Gail is sharing a room in a well-known downtown flophouse for which she and a roommate pay about $250 a week… Claud with his girlfriend and two unrelated men in a two-room apartment…
