Alfred Tennyson's "Mariana" Meter: Poetry's rhythm is defined by a regular sequence of stressed and unstressed syllables, which is called the metre in some cases. These stress patterns are determined by clusters of two or three syllables that are referred to as feet. In 1830, the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson included Mariana in his collection Poems, Chiefly Lyrical, which was the first time the poem had been published. Following the themes of solitude
and memory, which are frequently addressed in Tennyson's writing, the story is set in the present [ CITATION Mas21 \l 1033 ]. Marnia, a character from Tennyson's Mariana, who appears in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, is a lady who is expecting a lover who never arrives. Mariana's sense of hopelessness and melancholy is made instantly apparent by the depiction of her surroundings in the first chapter. Throughout the novel, the reader is bombarded with images of Mariana's desolate, dilapidated home. It begins with images of neglect: "the blackest moss," "rusted nails," "broken sheds," and "Weeded and worn the ancient thatch," to name a few examples. The gloomy tone established in the opening eight lines sets the stage for Mariana's psychological state.
