Rough Draft
In Lorraine Hansberry’s novel A Raisin in the Sun , Walter Young, a character that
portrays certain values about how to structure his life out of poverty. His mother, being fortunate
enough to receive a 10,000 dollar check due to her husband's insurance policy, Walter tries to
persuade her to open up his dream liquor store. As it is her wealth she would like to invest it into
the generations to come of her family. Due to this we see Walter become frustrated with his mom
because all that he wanted to do was to provide for his family like a real “man” should. Walter in
the story shows many signs of greed because he wants to benefit himself in becoming someone
that is successful in his image. He uses as many tools and advantages to gain money in order to
get to his goal of “financial freedom”.
Walter Young is someone that is looking for any way to structure his life out of poverty.
Walter Younger is Mr. Arnold's chauffeur but does not want to work for others. Walter feels his
job offers him no dignity, the job as a chauffeur he finds unsatisfying because he does not desire
to be anyone's servant. From this you could see he is striving to make money. Walter takes on
challenges in order to obtain wealth. When Walter hits rock bottom we find out that he feels as
though he failed his family and to make things “better” then he considers taking a loan from
