Alan VanToai Section 0901 Paper 1 A song that I feel represents an important theme in my life is the Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize” as performed live at the All Good Music Festival, 2005. The summer of 2005 for me was a period of change, and the lyrics of the Lips’ song are a perfect representation of the new ideals I was forming as I entered my final year of high school. In the song, Wayne Coyne – the bold and often eccentric leader of the Flaming Lips – sings, “Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face Do You Realize - we're floating in space - Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun don'-go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round” These lyrics are extremely abstract and leave the interpretation almost exclusively to the listener. Because of this, some people may hear the song and disregard the lyrics as
