Phil209A Lecture 4/8/08 School of Mo Tzu/Mozi Mencius 3B:9 -Mencius was born +100 years after Confucius and there were many different schools of thought in China that he wanted to argue against. That is why he talked in lengthy and argumentative way. Background of Mo Tzu and his School: -Mo Tzu was a bit later than Confucius - The school is not only a ‘school,’ it is a very well trained organization with central thoughts and good in actions, etc -History in textbook Universal Love (jian-ai) -core philosophy of the school -Love all people without any difference. Particularly focusing on social issues…treat all people the same and focusing on the consequence of your actions…similar to utilitarianism -no difference in love between city -therefore they help every city that is being conquered/attacked by others until city can defend itself- then would move on - help others with no reward wanted Non-Attacking -against war -non-attacking is the highest ideal- goal -Method: help the weaker states to defend themselves from the strong
