Chapter 1 Describe what managers do Managers get things done through other people -plan -organize -lead -control Define organizational behavior Organizational behavior A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structures have on behavior within organization, for purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness Studies: individuals, groups, and structure What people do and how their behavior affects the performance Identify the contributions made to OB by major behavioral science disciplines—in context of 3 levels (page 13) Psychology -measure, explain, and sometimes change the behavior of humans Contribution: learning, motivation, personality, emotions, perception… Unit of analysis: individual Social Psychology -people’s influences on one another Contribution: behavioral change, attitude change, communication, group processes, group decision making Unit of analysis: Group Sociology -people in relation to their environment or culture
