History Survey of American history What events prompted the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890? What was the end result of that massacre? EVENTS/END RESULT Aug 30, 2007 Big business north and the new South The Creation of the Lost Cause The Gilded Age and Assimilation Gilded Age- Golden age If you look closely, you find out it’s not so pretty due to poverty, sewage in the streets, burning houses. Assimilation Taking immigrants to make them American. E.g. trying to make a catholic a protestant and white Immigrants (mainly Europeans) were considered white, mid century. Rags to Riches From farm boy to senator Belief that an individual could improve his/her lot in life through hard work and proper behavior. o Protestant work ethic o Horatio Alger Always talked about young boys. Boys living on the street shining shoes and the work conditions. They didn’t spend their money wisely because they gambled and went to the movies. Emergence of the middle class Andrew Carnegie- worked in a steel factory. 1873, he had worked himself from someone who worked in a factory to someone who owned his factory named Carnegie steel. Sold his factory for 450 million dollars. Big Business Horizontal integration -John D. Rockefeller- owned standard oil -J.P. Morgan- owned steel co--operation Vertical integration- buy all companies that will help you do what you do. -Andrew Carnegie Bought railroads, steel…. Monopolies (vertical or horizontal) -Cornelius Vanderbilt -Owned 97% of the railroad industry. -Could control the price of how much it costs to ship the goods that people were producing. EVENTS/END RESULT Based on Social Darwinism -Herbert Spencer “Survival of the Fittest” Created by Andrew Carnegie (gospel of wealth) Carnegie hall in New York City was created by him so that people could go to concerts Labor Unions o National Labor Union o Molly Maguire’s o Knights of Labor (first created like a secret society) 1869 Terrance Powderly Open to anyone who worked. Exceptions for doctors and lawyers because apparently they didn’t do “work” American Federation of Labor -1881 -Samuel Gompers – focused on skilled labor only. Which left out women, African Americans, and no children…. so basically white men. 12-14 hours shifts. Better pay for skilled workers. They achieved even though they were unfair to those minorities “Redeeming” the South Redeemers- Led redemption Elite planters Businessmen Primary concerns of Redeemers -“Home rule” -Social conservatism -Commitment to economic development of the south Make sure that southerners were running the south, economically develop it.
