One problem that struck throughout the aftermath of the civil war was segregation, especially after the 13 th amendment which abolished all slavery. Included in the segregation, southern state legislatures passed “black codes” which restricted the rights of free African Americans and accentuated that ex-slaves were not free men but “free Negros”.
