DaiYu or BaoChai: A century long of debate The Dream of the Red Chamber is one of the greatest novels in the Chinese literature history, and no other great novels have created so much controversy and heated debate like Dream of the Red Chamber has. The basic story line starts with the Jia family and its eldest son, Jia BaoYu. In the ancient feudalism Chinese society, the family chooses the bride-to-be and the groom would have no choice but to accept what the family decides. The bride-to-be, Xue BaoChai, a quiet and the typical model of the feudal and ethical society, and Lin DaiYu, a delicate and intelligent girl that is on the progressive side of the society, are the subjects of discussion in this paper and the long heated debate in Redology for the past couple of centuries. Interestingly, in the Chinese society, the perception that is attached to the name Lin DaiYu due to her well-known personality, namely whiny nature, feeble physique and constant-worrying personality, cause the people that haven’t read the novels a generalization about DaiYu’s personality and leading them to choose BaoChai without a deep understanding of her personality.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
