Many recipes passed down from generation togeneration were from other civilizations as well as their most popular foods today like mofongo,bacalao, and pasteles. Christopher Columbus and Juan ponce de Leon were some of the reasonsfor this mixture of other cultures into their own just by exploring and showing what their homecountries had to offer.Coriander, papaya, cocoa, nispero, apio, plantains, and yampee are among the indigenoustastes and components. According to Puerto Rican cuisine, Cocina criolla can be traced back tothe island's Arawak and Taino Indigenous peoples, who thrived on corn, tropical fruit, andseafood. When Ponce de León and Columbus arrived in 1508, they brought beef, pigs, rice,wheat, and olive oil with them. Soon after, the Spanish began cultivating sugarcane andimporting African slaves, bringing okra and taro with them. The blending of flavors andingredients passed down that was from generation to generation among the island's various
