Chapter 2 – Research Methods in I/O Psychology Research Questions - Every study has a research question, should be specific o Eg. What causes people to like or dislike their jobs? – GENERAL Does pay affect how much people like their jobs? – SPECIFIC - Hypothesis: researcher’s guess about what the results of a study will be o Eg. People who are paid well will like their jobs better than people who are not - Most hypotheses and research questions come from prior research/theory Research Design Concepts Variables - Attribute/characteristic of people or things that can vary o Eg. intelligence, job satisfaction, behaviour, job performance, etc - IV: variables manipulated by researcher - DV: variables assessed in response to independent variables Research Setting - Field vs. Lab - Most I/O research occurs in field settings Generalizability - If results are generalizable, they can be extended to other settings/situations - Lab => we aren’t sure if the results will be the same when in actual field setting - Field => results could be different b/w different settings (works with one group, doesn’t work with another group) Control -
