Chapter 5 – Assessment Methods for Selection and Placements Five Assessment Techniques 1. Psychological Test 2. Biographical Information 3. Interview 4. Work Sample 5. Assessment Center - Assessments can be used for selection/placement, employee dv, etc Psychological Test - Assesses particular individual characteristics o Ability, interests, knowledge, personality, skill - Multiple items used to assess single characteristic to INCREASE reliability/validity o Eg. using 5 questions instead of 1 to assess extraversion Characteristics of Psychological Tests - Individual vs. Group (group pref b/c more efficient) - Closed-ended vs. Open-ended o Closed-ended easier for scoring, Open-ended better for some characteristics (eg. writing ability) - Paper-and-Pencil vs. Performance o Performance test involves apparatuses, equipment, materials, tools Eg. Typing test - Power vs. Speed o Disadvantage of speed: test-taker at disadvantage if slow reader/writer Ability Tests - Measure of person’s ability to learn/do a particular task - Cognitive Ability Test o Intelligence, IQ, math, verbal ability o Higher score => higher job performance o Personnel Tests for Industry (PTI) => assesses math/verbal ability - Psychomotor Ability Test o Performance tests of coordination b/w senses and movement o Score based on time taken to complete task o Purdue Pegboard Dexterity Test => assesses finger accuracy and speed - Knowledge/Skill Test (aka Achievement Test o Tests what a person knows/is able to do o Eg. Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT) => assesses mechanical ability and knowledge about tools
