She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn't go far.” This quote fantastically displays Della’s deep love for her husband, Jim. She wants so desperately to please him this Christmas by getting him an unforgettable present. However, we can see that she has a very little amount, and it leaves her worried and upset. Theme: Sacrifice “I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” Jim loves Della so much that he is willing to sacrifice his most prized possession for her happiness.
