Kevin Arnold PHL 321.02 The pro-life/ pro-choice war has been the topic of debate for years and will continue for years to come. Each group believing they know what is best for the women who are placed in the situation where they need to choose whether or not they can go through with an abortion. With 1.3 million pregnancies ending with an abortion each year it is obvious this debate will not end any time soon. Women should have the right to chose what they feel is best for their particular situation. In the U.S Constitution it states that all people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. For a Kantian moral ethics are judged through the inherent rights within each of us. A basic fundamental right for Kant is the right to live. Now at first glance this would seem to state that abortion is morally wrong. However, if we look at a case of a woman who will die if they give birth then we can see where allowing the choice of abortion is the morally right thing to do. This is possible because Kant also believes that the right to self-preservation is also an inherent right. The right to choice can extend beyond the right to self-preservation. With the tests available today to test the fetus for genetic diseases is increasingly available. Finding a child has a genetic disease that will debilitate them for life or cause pain and suffering is grounds for a morally justifiable abortion. Destroying a fetus that will suffer from a genetic disorder instead of being viewed as murdering is actually preserving the dignity of it. Instead of allowing the fetus to grow and be born and live life in pain, destroy it before it feels the suffering thus upholding the dignity of humanity. By forcing women to give birth to an unwanted child their basic rights are being taken away from them. Their freedom to choose what is

in their best interest is taken away, their pursuit of happiness is taken from them, and some may say their lives are destroyed. If a woman is determined to have an abortion then she will find a way to do so. Like all things illegal, the laws and consequences are not enough to stop individuals from partaking in the illegal activity. There for if a woman in unable to obtain a legal abortion in a safe medical environment, the likelihood that they will partake in illegal, unsafe methods to terminate the pregnancy will increase. Such methods include attempted removal of the fetus with a coat-hanger, self-induced suction through the insertion of a
