PERSONALITY psychoanalytic theory (Freud ): the unconscious forces act as determinants of personality. - Id: Most primitive, present in birth, always looking for immediate gratification. The pleasure principle, the source of libido. - Super Ego: how we are supposed to behave. Composed of Ego ideal: how we should behave and what to grow up to be Conscience: rules for how we should behave. - Ego: Operates on the reality principle: conscious. Tries to balance out the competing forces of the id and the super ego. Psychosexual development: erogenous zones and failure to resolve conflict at each stage causes fixation. - Oral Stage: (0-18 months) child gets to know the world through its mouth. Nursing is a source of pleasure. - Anal Stage: (12-18 months- 3 years) Gratification with expelling and holding in of feces.
