Kohlberg's stages of moral development: Day care controversy: - by age 4 80% of children receive non parental care. - Benefits: social interaction with peers, new environment, cultural diversity, independence, parents work=more $ - Costs: resentful, separation anxiety, insecure attachment, exposure to negative or harmful learning experiences, feeling of neglect. Parenting styles: - Authoritarian: set the rules and expect them to be followed. o Cold, punish physically, distant o Children are withdrawn and anxious. Poorer academic and social skills. o More neg for boys than girls. - Authoritative: set high but realistic standards. o Firm limits, explain rules, encourage, show respect for children. o Children are the most mature, happy, self reliant, most successful; in school and higher levels of self esteem, better behavior. - Indulgent/Permissive: warm and nurturing, but don’t set limits. o Children tend to be immature, impulsive and dependent.
