Energy Drinks Effect on Health All nighters and athletic competitions are common events for why people will use energy drinks. Writing research papers and studying for exams are likely causes for why students are up until the early hours of morning or simply do not sleep at all. It is common knowledge that lack of sleep can cause many both long and short term health problems, the most immediate and noticeable of which is lack of focus. This begs the question, how do people learn and write well with a major lack of coherency. The answer is actually quite simple; we have learned that certain foods and drinks contain chemicals that will enable us to function properly without sleep. As children we have watched our parents drink coffee in the morning to wake up and give them a push of energy to start the day. Today’s generation does not rely on natural amounts of caffeine like that in coffee but rather a blend of synthetic chemicals and herbal extracts in a number of soda-like drinks. Energy drinks as they are called give the body both a physical and mental boost that allow an individual to function properly and at normal standards for a limited time. The effect and uses of these drinks however is not the question. The question is how the ingredients in these drinks affect the body and the health of a person. The Idea of energy drinks is nothing new. 25 years ago the Coca-Cola Company released a new drink called Jolt cola. While not a typical energy drink by today’s standards it was a highly caffeinated drink that was advertized as a way to fit more hours into your day. The drink wasn’t a success and was temporarily suspended. The idea behind the drink however caught the attention of companies all over the world. Coca-Cola’s release of Jolt set in motion a sequence of events that has led to the creation of today’s most successful non-soda drink on the market.

The name of this new drink is now common knowledge, Red Bull. In a matter of years Red Bull gained 47% of the energy drink market. With the immense success of Red Bull, more companies began to distribute their versions of energy drinks. Today there are currently 125 different kinds of energy drinks distributed worldwide consisting in 3.5 billion dollars of annual revenue. Coinciding with the rise in energy drinks the continuing high demands in the United States education system has increased. To cope with these high demands and expectations, students have had to stay up later and work harder adding both un-necessary stress and anxiety to their lives. It is believe that these are major proponents in the energy drink industry’s rise to power. In my personal experience, it is necessary for both energy and focus to complete acceptable work on any project, especially during the late hours of the night. Conducting research or studying for an exam it is easy to fall victim to exhaustion. An easy fix is simply grab
