Cognitive Psychology section 1 5/7/2008 Cognitive Application Improved Design for Young Child’s Learning Computer There are several children’s learning computers on the market today. They are useful for teaching basic mathematics, reading and writing but lack the ability to teach a child how to use a PC. These computers often run on small, open source operating systems that do not teach basic PC skills such as word processing and internet browsing. Currently vTech is the leading manufacturer of children’s computers. Most of these computers have full keyboards and small black and white screens. The programs are small games of basic code that run automatically. [a]All of these computers are meant for children between 2-7 years of age in the preoperative stage of cognitive development (pg.387). They are very intuitive and take very little thought to operate. While useful for teaching basic skills they are unable to help children [b1]learn basic problem solving skills of the concrete operation stage .
