NURSING 2 Several different viruses that cause inflammation of the membranes in the throat and nose linings cause the upper respiratory infection (URI), commonly known as common cold. The most common viruses causing upper respiratory infection include the rhinoviruses, adenovirus, and parainfluenza and respiratory syncytial virus among others. According to Shanley, wheeler and Wong, 2014, lower respiratory infection (LRI) ranges from the mild mucosal infection, acute or mild bronchitis, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary disease to severe community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Commonly acquired lower respiratory infection, on the other hand, is commonly a bacterial infection with extensive mortality rates. URI is often treated with antiviral drugs while lower respiratory infections are treated using antibiotic medicines. URI or common cold are common for both adults and the children especially during
